Ouarzazate – The Door to the Desert
Ouarzazate is a city located in southern Morocco, at the edge of the Sahara Desert. It is often referred to as the "Door to the Desert" because it is the last major city before entering the vast desert areas. Ouarzazate is known for its stunning landscapes, ancient kasbahs (fortresses), and as a famous filming location for many movies.
The city is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty—mountains, valleys, and desert plains. One of the most famous landmarks near Ouarzazate is Aït Benhaddou, a traditional mud-brick village that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has appeared in many popular movies and TV shows, such as Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy.
Ouarzazate is also home to Atlas Studios, one of the largest film studios in the world. Many Hollywood movies have been filmed here due to its diverse landscapes that resemble ancient Egypt, Arabia, and even Mars.
In addition to cinema, Ouarzazate plays an important role in solar energy. It hosts one of the largest solar power plants in the world – the Noor Solar Plant, which helps Morocco transition to clean energy.
The city has a calm and peaceful atmosphere. The locals are friendly, and the culture is a blend of Berber, Arab, and Saharan traditions. Visitors can enjoy local crafts, delicious food, and guided trips into the desert on camels or 4x4 vehicles.
